Meeting with City of Davenport, Police, Legal Professor from U of Iowa, and DIAA.

I have exciting news to share with you. We just had a meeting with the Davenport Police Department, Davenport Civil Rights Commission, Deaf Iowans Against Abuse, and a professor from the University of Iowa. We all came together to discuss issues facing the Deaf community. We are preparing trainings for the police department and the Deaf community which will happen later this fall. The trainings will be about how the police and the Deaf community can communicate with each other. This isn’t about saying that anyone is in trouble or is doing anything wrong. This is about bridging the gap and creating allies for our community. We need to understand the perspective of the police officers, and they need to understand the perspective of Deaf people. If we understand each other, then we can improve as a community. I’m excited about this and will keep you updated. We are hoping to have this ready by this fall. I’m really looking forward to working with these groups. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email me.
